« Previous | Main | Next » October 19, 2007 Your turn: Udrih vs. WashingtonOne of our readers, Joel, sent in this suggestion: "Can you start an online poll: keep DW and trade/waive/buyout Beno, or keep Beno and cut DW? Put me down for keeping DW -- that guy has incredible poise and skills for an undrafted rookie! How can the Spurs even think of paying Beno to sit on the injured list all year when they have such an awesome talent they can sign for league minimum?" Darius Washington is a 6-foot-2 rookie guard from Memphis. He is averaging 10.7 points and 3.3 assists in 19.3 minutes in three preseason games. Udrih is a 6-3 guard about to start his fourth season with the Spurs. He averaged 4.7 points and 1.7 assists in 73 games last season. Udrih has not played this preseason due to a broken finger. Jeff McDonald of the Express-News looks at Washington's odds of making the Spurs' roster. CommentsThis is an easy call. Dump Beno and keep Washington. Beno has been on the team for 3 seasons and has not developed. At this point, it's hard to imagine him being any more than whatever he is now. He's got no heart or desire. Washington, on the other hand, has skills, instincts, is a decent passer, can break down a defense and suprisingly HE CAN REBOUND the basketball. The Spurs need to give this kid a chance. Especially in light of the fact that they have no depth at the PG position. Jacque Vaughn is serviceable, but not a long-term answer at the position. An investment in Washington is an investment in the future. He could easily develop behind Vaughn and Parker, and if he keeps progressing could likely step into a full-time backup PG position within 1-2 seasons. This is clearly a no-brainer. Posted by: Lon at October 20, 2007 11:53 PM With the numbers that Darius is putting up so far, the smart choice is to put him on our roster. We seriously need to look on letting Beno go and counting our losses. I believe even though our guys might play in the Toros, they still count for a roster spot. I might be wrong! Posted by: Federico Marquez at October 20, 2007 11:03 PM Why should we choose...give both Beno and Darius a roster spot and waive Marcus Williams. He can still play for the Toros and everything still moves on according to plan. If the Spurs do not keep Darius Washington, however, I will be disappointed. 4 points is a bunch, but when is Williams ever gonna see daylight? Posted by: Tim at October 20, 2007 05:09 PM KEEP DW & TRADE BEN Posted by: KAY at October 20, 2007 05:00 PM Darius over Beno. This is an easy one. Presently, DW is a better player, a better leader, healthier, and cheaper than BU. In the future, he will be more of the same (at least) and probably increase his value as he gains experience. Meanwhile, Beno will still be Beno. I know the Spurs brass know best, but this is a no-brainer. Posted by: Erick at October 20, 2007 12:16 PM Why does it have to be Beno vs. DW. The guy that should get cut is Marcus Williams. He is the one with the non-guaranteed contract. It would not make sense to cut Beno, b/c his pay would still count against the cap. Marcus Williams is just not as good as DW, so why keep him. DW will make a solid backup. The only way we should get rid of Beno, is for a future draft pick. That is best way to get him off the roster. But I would cut Marcus Williams first, and just sign DW. We can always keep Beno for potential mid season trade bait if something pops up. Posted by: adam at October 20, 2007 11:50 AM Keep DW, this is a no brainer. Don"t you'll remember how difficult it's been to find a quality back up PG, for the SPURS? The reality is BU knows the SPURS system, however, what good has it meant to the SPURS team, while they were out there battling through the season? DW has a talent that can"t be taught (Heart) drive and determination. How many veteran players in the NBA can"t/wont measure up to such important skills as these. DW plays the game the way the 1979 SPURS team, played against the 1979 Phil. 76ers team in game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals. DW may not know the SPURS system, however, he does know how to give this team what we're going to need in the very near future. Name me one PG who can best benefit from TP battles in practice. RC and Pop have always been outstanding in knowing talent, I don't see them letting this young man get away. Please sign DW now, he's going to be worth it. Posted by: The Coach at October 20, 2007 10:55 AM i say that DW should get a spot if he plays like this or close to it for the rest of the pre-season. Sure it will take him time to learn the new system but Beno isn't even going to be used Posted by: gunit at October 19, 2007 11:29 PM We need some youth. Washington will save us $ in the long run and he can be the back up point gaurd we've needed. Vaughn has a couple of good years left and Washington can be groomed to replace him as TP's back-up. Someone is going to pick this kid up if we don't keep him and he's going to be a solid player. Trade Beno for a future draft pick. Cleveland was interested in him last year. Posted by: Ted at October 19, 2007 10:21 PM Let's try to keep Darius. Beno has proven not to have what it takes to be even a back up in this team. Darius doesn't know the system, it's true, but Beno knows it and he still can make two consecutive plays without making a whole mess. Maybe Daruis can bring that freewheeling touch he has shown is capable of, and for that knowing the Spurs system y not needed. C?mon!! You really think Beno can do anything for this team?? Let him go, start a new life somewhere else, and let's start training DW for next years. Voughn will barely be able to walk without stink by the 2008 training camp! Who's gona replace JV, Beno? Posted by: Consiglieri at October 19, 2007 07:48 PM The Spurs' system is so complex, it often takes players several years to grasp it. Beno, for all his limitations, knows the system and could step in for Parker and Vaughn. Washington, despite impressive numbers playing with the 3rd team against others' 2nd teams, would need at least a year or two before he the system well enough to play when it counts. Keep Beno. Posted by: dp at October 19, 2007 06:46 PM I would keep Darius Washington and let Beno go. Beno has had 3 years to improve, yet he still the same player. He is a wasted roster spot. Posted by: John Sanford at October 19, 2007 06:21 PM I say give Darius a chance. He is full of energy & has guts. He is also capable of playing the 1 &/or 2 spot so I think that can be very positive.
